You’ll Be Under My Wheels

“Is it fast enough so we can fly away? We gotta make a decision. We leave tonight or live and die this way”
Fast Car - Tracy Chapman

In a car,  every single part counts. Even if one bolt, or one washer is missing, the vehicle is not complete. From engine oil to brake fluid, from the tyres to the gearbox. Every part has it’s role to play.

It’s the same with a nation. Every system’s gotta function well to run smoothly. Every ethnicity has to be lubricated to avoid unnecessary friction.

That’s what the world saw today on the track at Sepang, Malaysia. A new team. A new driver. A new car. A new light unto the world. In case you didn’t notice, it was the Lotus Racing team.

Doesn’t sound familiar? You’ve probably heard or read about the 1Malaysia Formula 1 Team. That’s them. The team that did Malaysia proud today.

The racetrack is where every second counts. It is where safety is usually neglected and shoved aside. People wanted speed to matter. Even the handling of the cars didn’t matter as much.

So that’s probably why Team Virgin and Team HP blew out today. Their engine was pushed beyond the limits. Lotus was no risk-taker. They went slower that some others, but they were very steady. No screw ups.

Even though our team ended up at the bottom of the list, it doesn’t matter. We played fair and made it. Slow and steady. In the hearts of Malaysians, we won not because we bore a flag or a sticker, but because we were there and represented. That was enough to reflect a victory.

We stand today as 1Malysia. We are the parts and bolts of the vehicle that is Malaysia. Without us, the nation would just fall apart. 1Malaysia can’t run without us. It’s the lubricant that reduces the friction between us. We can’t just step back and expect it to change our lives. No one can be changed if they do not want to be changed.

Therefore, we can all take a lesson from the key sponsor of the team, Tune. Their courageous effort just reminds us that we all need to change ourselves a little each day, and that a little effort can go a long way. That’s why we can say “Tune” stands for…
